Timber Frame Shelter

From a little covered nook outside in your garden, to a big community shelter that can fit 30 people in. We make stunning handcrafted timber framed shelters for all sorts of uses.

These structures will be made from Douglas Fir sourced from Community Woodlands around the Highlands. They are big bold shelters with large timbers and oak pegs holding everything together. We can organise digging and setting foundations for your project, as it will need to be well anchored to survive all weathers. We can also put a living roof of turf on top.

This is a big project! Get in touch with us when you first start thinking about it and we will come to you to discuss design, planning and engineering certificates, funding raising and timescales. With an outline plan we will get a deposit from you to begin what will probably be a multi-year project. Don’t worry! We can help you get designs to your local authority, negotiate the various permissions you need, and work with a building engineer who understands timber frames to get their sign-off on the design. We also have lots of experience with funding so can advise you if that’s the route you go down to pay for the shelter.

Early on in the project we will need to purchase logs and do the first milling process to get them seasoning. A project this big means we won’t have spare seasoned timber in the store, so will have to select trees, mill, air-dry and follow a slow but special process through to a finished product. While the timber is settling there will be some time to sort details, prepare ground and foundations, and think about what you might want inside the shelter.

When the timber is seasoned we will start work on crafting all the pieces, which will hold the structure together with only wood! Making a timber frame is a long process, but so rewarding when you get to help put it all together. We will bring the frame to you in pieces and organise a safe and fun raising to get the structure up.
