Timber Frame House

This is the big one! Massive timbers holding up your dream home.

From small exposed trusses to a full post and beam construction, these big projects are exciting! With oak pegs holding the joint together, the Douglas Fir timbers will flex and crack (slightly) as they bed down in your building. As so many of those beautiful medieval timber framed buildings around the UK show, this is all natural, and the frame will last for hundreds of years.

We will handcraft your frame from Douglas Fir sourced from Community Woodlands around the Highlands. This is a big project! Get in touch with us when you first start thinking about it and we will come to you to discuss design, planning, engineering certificates and timescales. We will work with your and your house building team to get the frame to you at the right time, and make sure your builder is ready to incorporate it into your home.

When we have agreed an outline plan we will get a deposit from you to begin what will probably be a multi-year project. Don’t worry! We can work with your architect to negotiate the various permissions you need, and we have a great working relationship with a building engineer who understands timber frames as you will need to get their sign-off on the design.

Early on in the project we will purchase logs and do the first milling process to get them seasoning. A project this big means we won’t have spare seasoned timber in the store, so we will have to select trees, mill, air-dry and potentially remill if the posts and beams have moved as they dried. It will be a slow but special process through to a finished product - we’ll keep you updated at all stages.

When the timber is seasoned we will start work on crafting all the pieces, which will hold the structure together with only wood! Making a timber frame is a long process, but so rewarding when you get to help put it all together. We will bring the frame to you in pieces and organise a safe and fun raising to get the structure up and into your house.
